The United States and Britain have concluded a trade deal in metals, whiskey, jeans and more

Under the agreement, the United States and the United Kingdom will also continue to exert “distorting market influence or ownership” in the metallurgical and aluminum industries.

The United States has said it will send a trade delegation to Britain soon for further talks.

The agreement “implements President Biden’s vision to rebuild relations with our allies, and helps ensure the long-term viability of our steel and aluminum industries, the communities they support and, most importantly, workers on both sides of the Atlantic,” she said in a statement. .

Thomas M. Conway, international president of United Steelworkers, said the union supported the agreement and that it was “an important step in addressing systemic issues such as illegal landfills and global overcapacity that threaten the viability and future of our metallurgical and aluminum industries.”

Chris Swinger, executive director of the Spirits Council, said American distilleries “are happy with the end of this long tariff nightmare.” According to the group, exports of American whiskey to Britain have fallen by 42 per cent since 2018, when tariffs were imposed.

“Following the abolition of grueling tariffs in response to the UK’s export of American whiskey, American distillers are ready to start the race,” he added.

The two countries have not announced their intention to end negotiations under the Trump administration on a free trade agreement. British leaders described the potential deal as a stand-alone move for their economy after leaving the European Union and pushed the Biden administration to negotiate.

But the Biden administration has shown little appetite for accepting the Trump administration’s goals, saying the trade dialogue with the United Kingdom should explore “reciprocal international trade priorities based on our shared values while fostering innovation and inclusive economic growth.”

The future dialogue will address issues such as trade and investment involving small businesses, the digital economy, strong supply chains and the protection of labor rights and the environment, the Biden administration said.
