Poll: Most UK smokers are happy to buy banned tobacco

Nearly three-quarters (71 per cent) of respondents to smokers in the UK bought banned tobacco last year, according to a recent poll published in Conversation in retail.

This figure is lower than in 2019, when the same poll found that 78 percent of respondents said they bought illegal tobacco.

One problem for the industry is that few consumers have moral reservations about buying banned products. Sixty-eight percent of respondents said they have no problem buying tobacco this way.

A survey of 12,000 smokers conducted by the Tobacco Growers Association (TMA) also found that nearly one-fifth (19 percent) of respondents bought banned tobacco on social media.

“This year’s poll shows positive news: more people reported illicit tobacco when they knew it – a significant increase to 32 per cent from 17 per cent in 2017 – and a decrease in the number of people buying illicit tobacco in each region across the world. The UK, with the exception of London, ”said Rupert Lewis, director of TMA.

However, the results of 2021 continue to highlight the continued widespread availability of illicit tobacco, as well as the introduction of many consumers’ belief that the trade or purchase of illicit tobacco is “acceptable”.
