Wayne Rooney has admitted his wife Coleen Rooney gave him no warning of her now infamous Wagatha Christie Instagram post, as he took to the stand during her libel trial.

Coleen’s fellow WAG, Rebekah Vardy, is suing for libel, after the wife of Wayne Rooney accused her Instagram account of being linked to stories leaking to the press back in 2019.

Whilst giving evidence in court, Wayne, 36, described his wife as an ‘independent woman’ who ‘does her own’ thing, and revealed that Coleen, also 36, did not give him a heads up in 2019, before the controversial post.

Regarding leaks from Coleen’s private Instagram account, Wayne recalled his wife getting “frustrated”.

His statement read: “During 2017, I recall Coleen being really frustrated that posts/stories that she had uploaded to her Private Instagram Account were being leaked to The Sun.

“Whilst it was obviously upsetting Coleen, I didn’t want to get involved. I don’t read the press, particularly The Sun, and I have never been particularly active on social media (or at least I wasn’t active on social media at the time).

He continued: “Coleen keeps a lot to herself and I just didn’t pay much attention to the matter at all.”

As he gave evidence in court, in support of his wife, Wayne revealed that at Euro 2016 he had been asked by then England manager Roy Hodgson and his assistant Gary Neville to ask Jamie Vardy to tell his wife to “calm down” on social media, which he claims he did.

Wayne also revealed that he has his own private Instagram account with ‘about 300 followers’.

Speaking in court, he said: “My wife is an independent woman who does her own thing. I didn’t want to get involved.”

He continued: “Social media for me is the least of our worries.

“She made me aware of it. That is the last time we spoke about it until two years later.”

When Rebekah’s lawyer, Hugh Tomlinson, asked Wayne if it was of “concern” to him, Wayne replied: “It’s always a matter of concern when it involves your family. There was information which had been leaked,

“There was information that was false.

“I’ve learned to deal with it and not allow it to have an effect on my way of thinking.”

When it was mentioned that Coleen had told Wayne that she thought the ‘leak’ was Rebekah Vardy, Wayne said: “Was I surprised? No. But again I didn’t want to get involved with it,

“I was still playing football and Coleen was working independently herself.”

Admitting that he didn’t know about Coleen’s intent to post about Rebekah on social media until the day it was posted, Wayne said: “I woke up on October 9. I was in the US. My wife was in England. I saw that my wife had put a post out. That was the first knowledge I had of that.

“I spoke to my wife. I spoke to Mr Stretford [Wayne’s football agent] to try and see what was going on because it was a surprise to me.

“My wife had strong beliefs. She believed Mrs Vardy was leaking information from her private account and she took action.”

The trial continues…
