Coronation Street star Michael Le Vell has asked bosses to return his hero’s legendary mustache.

The 57-year-old actor has played Kevin Webster in perennial ITV soap since 1983.

For the past four decades, Michael has been inundated with letters from fans who have shared their love for his facial hair.

At the time, he also appeared in gay clubs, and Michael is keen to get his mustache back.

Speaking to the Daily Star and other press, Michael said: “I actually asked Ian a couple of years ago if we could do it for Movember, but apparently we can’t because it’s a special charity.

“I thought it would be a lot of fun. I went to every gay club and as soon as I shaved it off, the booking stopped.

He joked, “So I’m thinking of giving it back for some money.”

In Weatherfield, Kevin has to make an important decision, as Abby Webster (Sally Carman) plans to run away with her child Alfie.

Abby welcomes Alfie earlier this year in a one-night clash with Imran Habib (Charlie De Melo).

Kevin was heartbroken when he learned of his wife’s romance, but decided to help her in future scenes.

Speaking about the turbulent relationship between Kevin and Abby, Michael said: “I think she has brought him another dimension and she admires him.

“He doesn’t know what he will get from her day in and day out. I think it keeps him on his feet and doesn’t let him get bored.

“He sees that no one is perfect. He loves her, and when you love someone, you see their flaws. That’s what a relationship should be like.”

The soap star added: “Kevin himself was not an angel. He should eat a modest pie and say mistakes happen.”

Despite his role as Kevin for 39 years, Michael has admitted that he still loves his job.

He said: “I like it. What don’t I like here? Different scripts every week and I was happy with the actors I was put with, which makes my job a lot easier.

“It’s not that working with Sally Dinevor and Sally Karman, I’ve been blessed.

“It’s just a shame, Elena [Flanagan] and Brooke [Vincent] decided to leave and have children.

“No matter what scenarios you get, I’m very excited to be involved. It’s a fantastic place to work. “

Coronation Street goes out on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 8pm
