ITV Good Morning Britain viewers fume as Richard Madeley makes ‘car crash’ error with Max George’s name

Good Morning Britain viewers called Richard Madeley a ‘nuisance’ as he returned to the show on Wednesday. The presenter was fronting the ITV news programme alongside Charlotte Hawkins ahead of the long Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Things got off to a feisty start when Richard lost his temper with Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, who the hosting duo quizzed on ‘beergate’ which is currently surrounding the Labour Party.

The 66-year-old TV star blasted the Labour MP for not directly answering his question about who could be in the running to replace Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer if a police investigation finds that he was in breach of lockdown rules last April and issues him with a fine.

However, the tables were turned on Richard when later in the show he and Charlotte were joined live in the studio by Max George. The Wanted singer appeared live on GMB a day after speaking out about his bandmate Tom Parker’s death in his first interview on This Morning.

Max was on the programme to talk about his best friend’s passing as well as the late star’s book, Hope, which was written in the 12 months before Tom died and released last week, two months after his tragic death at 33.

The Bolton-born singer also spoke about how is own battle with his mental health lead to him being involved in and NHS campaign. He has appeared in a video alongside other famous faces as part of the health service’s ‘Help’ mental health campaign.

Richard and Charlotte asked Max how his mental health is now as he copes with the grief of losing his bandmate and ‘brother’. While he said mentally he is ‘OK’, he said that physically the pain of grief gets to him. He was then asked about something he mentioned on This Morning on Tuesday (May 31) that he still texts Tom.

But Richard pressed further and asked the 33-year-old about what kind of messages he sends and whether it relieves the pain of his loss.

GMB viewers, however, were quick to head to social media and complain about the chat. @Bufferb2012 fumed: “Ffs someone shut Madeley up and let max speak, he’s a nuisance #gmb.” @conormckenna101 tweeted: “Richard, STOP constantly interrupting Max, SO insensitive!!! #gmb.”

Viewers were quick to call out Richard’s error

@NDMORRS commented: “Richard really making Max go into so much depth about his grief. #GMB.” @@MrLawGreen wrote: “I wish Richard would just allow Max George speak!! Always interrupting he’s on to thank the NHS allow him to do that. @GMB #gmb @MaxGeorge #thewanted.”

Things, however, only got worse when Richard and Charlotte wrapped up the interview and Richard said: “Tom, it was really good to speak to you, I know you’re old friends with Tom and it was really nice to talk to you.” While the error wasn’t addressed, viewers didn’t let it go.

@KirstyLBx said: “It was bad enough Richard Madeley constantly interrupting Max but him ending the interview with thank you coming on Tom really is the cherry on the cake #GMB.” @Calvey1 complained: “@GMB Can someone tell Richard to pay attention, he had just been listening to Max talk about his friend Tom for 10mins and then still calls Max, Tom. That was a car crash TV moment.”

@Timothy06024821 raged: “Did madeley just call MAX out the wanted Tom honestly @gmb sort this. He was talking over Max all the way through that interview which is rude anyway but worse as it was about his grief and mental health.”
