Queen Elizabeth II left Buckingham Palace for the last time her coffin was carried Westminster Hall on a horse carriage.
Her son, the king Charles IIIand his brothers and sisters and sons marched behind the coffin, crowned with a wreath of white roses and its crown resting on a purple velvet pillow.
The military procession from the palace was designed to mark the Queen’s seven decades as head of state, as national mourning moved to boulevards and landmarks London. Eight pallbearers carried the coffin to the historic hall and placed it on a hill.
The Queen will lie indoors for four days before her funeral on Monday, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to file past.
Shortly after 5 p.m., the public viewing began in the center of the huge medieval hall. Two rows of people floated in the quiet river of humanity.
Some were in black suits and ties, others in jeans and sneakers. They waited for hours for the path past the coffin, which lasted only a few minutes.
Many cried as they approached the coffin. Some tipped their hats and one bowed. One dropped to one knee and blew a kiss.
