Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square: where is it from and when will it be lit?

T

The Christmas tree of 2022 was opened in London Trafalgar Squarebut not everyone is impressed.

The tree, on the branches of which extra growths appeared for the first time on Monday, is still there called everything from “overworked” to “pathetic”.

However, some people jumped to the tree’s defense. The British Embassy in Oslo felt the need to take to the internet to say the tree was “in perfect condition when it left” Norway and is a symbol of the close relationship between the two countries.

But what is the origin of the controversial foliage?

Where did the tree in Trafalgar Square come from?

A 21-meter-tall Christmas tree is a gift from Mr Norway in honor of Britain’s support during World War II.

King Håkan VII sent the first tree in 1947. This was as a thank you for staying in the UK after fleeing Norway when Nazi Germany invaded.

However, Britons were often unimpressed – as they were this year – by the look of the tree.

The BBC reported that the Christmas tree, which arrived in 2019, was criticized for looking “anemic” and “declined”.

The tree’s appearance was endorsed by the aptly named UK ambassador to Norway, Richard Wood, who noted: “This is what 90-year-old 25m trees look like in the wild.

“It’s important to consider the symbolism of the tree, not just how many branches it has.”

Responding to criticism of this year’s tree, one person tweeted: “I’m sick of Britain whining about the tree in Trafalgar Square.

“It’s a gift, it’s also real wood, not a pristine plastic ornament.

“I feel very bloody and ungrateful for being a generous and kind symbol of another nation.”

Another Twitter user posted updated photos on Tuesday. They said: “I just want to stand for the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square, Norway.

“I’m not [sic] know why people say they only sent us half a tree, seems to be fine this morning.’

When will the Christmas tree light up in Trafalgar Square?

The ignition takes place every year on the first Thursday of December. This year it falls on Thursday, December 1.

The lighting will be followed by a ceremony from 17:45 to 18:45. It will feature the Poetry Society’s reading of its seasonal children’s poetry commission, which will decorate the base of the tree.

Then, on January 6, 2023, the ornamental greenery will be removed from the square to be shredded for compost.
