The London Academy of Entrepreneurship is out of special measures

A high school that promotes “respect for all” has been removed from special measures.

Inspectors visited the London Enterprise Academy in Tower Hamlets on 5 and 6 July and the report was published on 27 October.

Whitechapel School, which was previously rated ‘inadequate’ in 2019, was rated ‘good’ in two areas (behaviour and attitudes and personal development) and rated ‘requires improvement’ in two others (quality of education and leadership and management).

In their report, inspectors wrote: “All staff take pupils’ welfare and social development seriously.

“Students not only feel safe, they are safe because of the attention the school places on ensuring good behaviour.”

Inspectors continued: “Behaviour is managed effectively. There has been a significant reduction in the incidence of bad behavior and time-bound exclusions. Attendance is high…

“Headteachers ensure that pupils’ wellbeing is a priority. In-school counseling supports pupils’ mental health. Pupils have said they find it particularly helpful.”

Inspectors said teaching had improved since the last inspection, with many pupils “making progress”.[ing] good academically.’

They added that there is still some way to go to ensure learning is consistently strong for all pupils, particularly those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) or those who speak English as an additional language.

Inspectors also said the school “was hampered by a lack of capacity to develop the school’s curriculum”.

“However,” they added, “a number of senior appointments have improved leadership potential.

“The work of senior and middle managers to improve the curriculum and methods of teaching it is bearing fruit.”

The Oftsed report praised many teachers’ understanding of how to teach their students, resulting in good student learning.

However, it has been noted that there are inconsistencies in the organization of learning, such as the use of assessment to test students’ knowledge.

Although leaders and managers at the London Business Academy have made reading a priority, inspectors said that “pupils’ literacy skills remain variable” and many students “read without the necessary accuracy and fluency”.This is local London: London Enterprise Academy students at the Bowl Out Racism event at Lord's Cricket Ground earlier this yearLondon Enterprise Academy students at the Bowl Out Racism event at Lord’s Cricket Ground earlier this year (Image: Emdad Rahman)

Director of the London Academy of Enterprise, Ashid Ali, said: “We welcomed the opportunity to show the inspectors the significant progress the school has made since their last visit.

“They found that students are happy and benefiting from our ambitious curriculum and after-school program.

“Staff, parents and pupils at the London Enterprise Academy continue to work together to keep the school growing at this pace – we’re proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the way forward.”
