Movie night! – Sophie Collins, Burntwood School

During the October half term, Burntwood School held its first ever film making competition.

Students in all courses were asked to make their own film, but they only had forty-eight hours, and it had to include the line “It’s better than nothing.”

The results were fantastic. Some movies were better than others, but overall the quality was pretty good.

There were different approaches to the task, some people, for example, did animation, or used puppets, mostly people and actors, and directors, and wrote the entire film (which had to be less than three minutes) in forty-eight hours.

After the end of the competition, the school held an awards night, during which all the films were shown, and then the winners in the various categories were determined.

It was amazing to see all the year groups competing against each other and having real fun trying to come up with an idea that included the required line of dialogue and an object and sound that were randomly drawn from a hat – resulting in some amazing concepts. For example, one movie told the story of a rat who was killed with a sword and then flushed down the toilet!

The atmosphere in the hall was wonderful. Everyone was polite and respectful and the competition was fierce, with many students walking away from the experience hoping to return next year and thanking the man who organized it, Mr Priddis.

One student, Zainab Rehman, creator of Too Much Time, said: “It was stressful but fun and exciting, I can’t wait for next year, hopefully we can do it again!”
