Christmas bins: when can you throw out your rubbish for the holidays?

holidays are near and, with festive food in the oven and presents under the tree, garbage is already accumulating.

But a holiday during this period there are usually changes in services – garbage collection is included.

How Christmas falls on a weekend this year, the bank holiday dates and times you can dispose of your rubbish have also been changed.

Before you dispose of your trash and recyclables, you need to know the following:

Christmas (Sunday, December 25) and New yearBoth days (Sunday 1st January) fall on a weekend and Boxing Day is on Monday 26th December.

It means extra holidays scheduled for Tuesday, December 27 and Monday, January 3.

It’s always best to check your address on council websites to confirm rubbish collection dates. However, here is a list of London boroughs with links to their websites:

The London City told residents: “Currently, there are no plans to change the collection day for food waste mixed at the roadside during the festive period. recycling or general garbage collection.’ They never collect on holidays.

The City of Westminster said it’s best to check your address on their website during the holidays.

Enfield said there will be no changes, but it’s best to check their website due to deteriorating weather conditions in case there are any last minute adjustments. Ram also stated that there were disruptions due to weather.

The Royal Borough Council of Kensington and Chelsea has confirmed that collections will not be held on public holidays and that residents will have to wait until the next collection day to see their bins emptied. Hammersmith and Fulham will pick up on Substitution Day, December 2nd, though the best check out the site for your address.

Hackney and Hounslow will be running waste collection with some dates pushed forward but still collection on Bank Holiday Tuesday (December 27).

Lambeth Council states on its website: “Our collections do not change on most holidays. If your collection day is Christmas and New Year we will collect the next day.’

Bexley will have adjusted timetables brought forward by one day in the new year. Bexley Council has an informative list of collections and information on its website.

Brent CouncilThe automated bin collection display service currently shows that there will be no change to bin collections over the 2022 festive period. However, some collections may take place at intervals of a day (such as regular rubbish and recycling) rather than on the same day.

U Havingfrom Monday, December 26, there will be no removal of garden and bulky waste. These services will resume on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Greenwich Council said that there would be changes during the holidays and that it would be best to check your address on their website.

Newham Council also has a lot of information about the revised changes on their website.

Southwark Council confirmed that container collection will take place on the scheduled collection day.

Tower Hamlets Council informed residents: “During the Christmas and New Year period, garbage, recyclables, food and garden waste collection will be carried out on a normal day for you. Please ensure that your rubbish and recycling (including food and garden waste) is available for collection by 7am on your scheduled collection day.’

The Kingston upon Thames Royal Borough Council told residents: “Collection staff are closed over Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year” and that they would have to wait for the next collection.

Haringey Council told residents they would have to wait until the next collection after the Christmas period to collect their bins.

Croydon Council reported that waste and recycling collection will vary for the weeks starting December 26, 2022, January 2, 2023, and January 9, 2023. Collections will be four days later than usual.

meanwhile, Bromley recommends that you check their website to see when your trash will be collected, as it does Sutton Council.

Wandsworth Council told residents: “Your rubbish and recycling will be collected as normal on all public holidays except Christmas and New Year. If they fall on a weekday, by the end of the week the fees will be one day later than usual.”

When will my containers be collected?

London councils will not collect bins on Christmas or New Year.

Some councils have arranged timetable changes and early removals on Christmas Eve, December 24.

Litter collection dates for litter will vary for each constituency, with some following a regular schedule and others arranging a change to avoid a build-up.

What goes in my blue bins?

Decorative tinsel, metallic wrapping paper, sticky tape and unclean foil containers will not be collected as part of the recycling collection.

Glitter and decorative foil are also not recyclable, so Christmas cards and wrapping paper with these elements do not go in the blue bins.

Trees over 6 feet tall are expected to be cut in half and left at your property boundary for collection in January 2023.

The following boroughs do not provide this service for every household, but offer alternative drop-off points for tree recycling: Barking and Dagenham, Brent, Bromley, Camden, City of London, Harrow, Havering, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Wandsworth and Westminster.
