Respect Index for Northern Ireland (Daily Discrimination Scale): 2016


This report presents data on the Respect Index, which measures the perception of discrimination that people face in their everyday lives. This report combines data for six years: 2016 – 2021.

Main results:

  • 19% (of NILT 2021 survey respondents) felt respected; this is a significant decrease (9 percentage points) from 2016.
  • A relative share of male respondents (20%) and female respondents (18%) felt respected.
  • Just over a fifth of Protestant respondents (22%) and equal shares of Catholic respondents (18%) and respondents from “other” groups (17%) said they felt respected. These differences were not statistically significant.
  • The age group with the lowest proportion of those who feel respected is the 25-34 age group (9%); the age group with the highest proportion of feeling respected was the 65+ age group (35%), which was significantly higher than all other age groups.
  • Respect was felt by 15% of respondents with disabilities and 20% without disabilities. This difference was not statistically significant.
