Much of the Scottish Highlands, as well as some lowland areas near Glasgow, Perth and Edinburgh, will be blanketed in white from 9pm tomorrow until 6pm on Boxing Day.

Temperatures could drop as low as 1C on Sunday night, with forecasters warning: “Frequent flurries are likely to cause disruption on higher routes.”

The Bureau of Meteorology also advised those living in affected areas to prepare for power outages.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist David Oliver said: “It’s an unsettled Christmas weekend for many, with those in the north and west seeing the most frequent and heaviest showers.

“Strong winds will affect some coasts over the weekend with gusty winds in places, particularly in the north and west.

“Christmas will be unsettled for many, with the most frequent rains in the northern half Great Britain and more sporadic and mostly light rain further south.

“There is some uncertainty about the timing of the arrival of colder air from the northwest, but it looks like it will bring snow showers to northwest Scotland late into Christmas.”

For those living in central and eastern England, the weather will be mostly dry over the festive period.

It comes as people across the UK face travel disruption and chaos following the extreme weather.

I saw the beginning of the week nine flood warnings and 43 alarms are in place across England, with a further seven in Wales.

While a sharp rise in temperatures from -17C to 15C a few days ago led to carnage as 30,000 people were affected by the burst pipes.

And at Manchester Airport earlier this month, passengers were left devastated when hundreds of flights were canceled due to both runways are closing.

Passengers this week report that luggage is waiting until seven hours due to heavy snowfall.
