Tottenham Hotspur lost 0-2 at home against Aston Villa.

London [UK]January 2 (ANI): Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz scored as Aston Villa compounded Tottenham’s misery by stunning the hosts to a fourth Premier League defeat in six games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Spurs, who needed to win to claw back fourth-placed Manchester United, put in another sluggish first-half performance and fell behind for the tenth time in a row when Emiliano Buendia pounced on Hugo Lloris’ blunder just after the break.

Aston Villa defended valiantly to keep Spurs at bay throughout and extended their lead when Luiz, whose long-range effort caused Lloris to make a mistake in the first leg, scored a brilliant team goal from John McGinn’s pass.

Spurs, who were missing Dejan Kulusevski with a minor ankle injury, could barely manage a response, not even registering a shot on target in the second period, Harry Kane a peripheral figure, Heung Min-Song again lacking sharpness and the home crowd booed after the final whistle.

The result piles up the pressure on head coach Antonio Conte and allows former Arsenal manager Unai Emery to extend his unbeaten run against Spurs to four Premier League games, with the win keeping Villa in 12th place in the table.

Tottenham face Crystal Palace in their next Premier League game on Wednesday and will be looking to get back to winning ways, while Aston Villa take on Wolves at Villa Park on the same evening.

Earlier, Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the English Premier League with a resounding 4-2 win over Brighton. (ANI)
