New manager TUC demands an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in an attempt to break the deadlock.

The latest rail strikes will lead to service disruptions across the country, while London will also be hit by bus driver strikes. A full list of affected services can be found below.

Meanwhile, in a letter to Mr Sunak, TUC chief Paul Novak called for a change in government direction and said public services were in crisis after years of being “underfunded and understaffed”.

“We cannot solve these problems without a fair deal for the people on the front lines,” he wrote.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT union, warned yesterday that rail protests were likely to continue beyond May unless a reasonable offer was made to workers.

Main events to date

Britain braced for fresh travel chaos this morning as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at Network Rail and 14 train operators embarked on two 48-hour walkouts from Tuesday and Friday.

Here’s an overview of the key developments:

“Permanent scars.”… said a source in the government The Times newspaper that a whole generation of commuters could be put off using the trains for good because of the ongoing strikes. The source described the new labor actions as “an act of self-harm”.

“Torpedoing” of negotiations…RMT general secretary Mick Lynch took aim at Transport Minister Mark Harper, saying Sky News he has heard “nothing tangible” from the government since they last met for talks before Christmas.

Security risks…Speaking at a picket outside Euston Station on Tuesday, The Independent Mr Lynch told Simon Calder the government was “prepared to take a risk with security” amid another round of exit polls.

Is the end visible?..Network Rail’s chief negotiator Tim Shavelar said BBC Radio 4 Today’s program to end rail strikes was on “reach”.

“Just don’t tell the whole truth”…Mr. Lynch also accused the transportation minister of lying after Mr. Harper denied allegations that the government was “blocking a settlement” with union leaders.

There is no magic money tree…Talking to LBC This morning, Mr. Harper said there is no “bottomless pit of taxpayer money” when it comes to negotiating with unions. “I don’t blame the unions for wanting more money, but it has to be balanced for passengers and taxpayers,” he said.

Will there be more disruptions?… Industrial action could continue “after May” unless the Government and rail companies make a reasonable offer, Mr Lynch warned in an interview with PA news agency.

Train strikes: How do RMT demands compare to Network Rail’s current offer?

Rail passengers will face further travel disruptions from today as tens of thousands of workers strike over a long-running dispute over pay, jobs and conditions.

Network Rail employees include signalmen and engineers who manage the UK’s rail infrastructure. Trade union representatives are negotiating with the management of this “state body of the Ministry of Transport”.
