Colin Morikawa single-handedly took over the TOC lead

Colin Morikawa reached the middle of the Sentry Tournament of Champions without a bogey on Friday and has a two-stroke lead in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Morikawa shot a 7-under 66 Friday at the Plantation course in Kapalua, leaving him at 16-under 130 through two rounds.

Scotty Scheffler also carded a 66 on Friday to move into a tie for second place with second-round first-round leader JJ Spawn, both at 14 under.

Jordan Spieth also shot a second-round 66 to tie for fourth at 13 under.

South Korea’s Tom Kim is tied for fifth at 12-under 69, while England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (second-round 69) and opening-round leader John Rahm of Spain (71) are tied for sixth at 11-under.

Luke List (second-round-best 65), Tony Finau (69), Aaron Wise (70) and Canada’s Corey Conners (78) are tied for eighth at 10 under.

The 39-player Tournament of Champions is the first of 17 scheduled PGA Tour events with increased purses this year. In the past, the event was limited to players who had won the tournament the previous year, but in 2023 the field was expanded to include players who did not win in 2022 but reached the Tour Championship.

Morikawa got off to a hot start on Friday, birdying four of the first five holes. He added three more birdies to the back nine before finishing with three straight pars.

Scheffler entered the fray by birdieing each of the final four holes, hitting shots under 8 feet each time. His round included nine birdies and two bogeys.

Spawn bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole, but didn’t make another shot. He finished with six birdies.

Spieth’s round was highlighted by eagles on two par-5 holes, the fifth and 15th. He also had four birdies and bogeys.

Xander Schaufele withdrew midway through the second round due to a lingering back ailment.

“It doesn’t get any better,” he said. “Actually, when I swing, I feel worse.”
