Government backs plan to ban gay conversion therapy and include trans conversion | Politics news

The Government will return the Gay Conversion Therapy Ban Bill to the House of Commons and include a ban on trans conversion therapy.

The policy has been proposed several times by Conservative governments, starting with Theresa May in 2018.

Boris Johnson also backed the plans, but after a series of reversals he eventually dropped protections for trans people after some Tory MPs expressed concern that parents were supporting children who are in doubt about their gender identity.

Culture Minister Michelle Donnellan made a written statement in the House of Commons today promising new legislation to include the measure.

“We recognize the strength of feelings around the issue of harmful conversion practices and remain committed to protecting people from these practices and ensuring that they can live free from harm or abuse,” she wrote.

“It is right that this issue is dealt with through a tailored and tailored legislative approach, so we are announcing today that the Government will publish draft legislation setting out the proposed approach to banning conversion practices, which will apply to England and Wales.

“The bill will protect everyone, including those who are targeted based on their sexuality or transgender status.”
