Police “review” video of Rishi Sunak not wearing a seat belt | UK news

Lancashire Police say they are “looking into the matter” after the Prime Minister was caught on camera not wearing a seatbelt.

Rishi Sunak admitted to a ‘brief lapse of judgement’ after appearing beltless in an Instagram clip where he contributed to its equalization of funding in Lancashire.

Downing Street said: “It was a brief lapse of judgement. The Prime Minister took off his seatbelt to film a small clip. He fully accepts it was a mistake and apologizes for it.”

The spokesman added: “The Prime Minister believes that everyone should wear seat belts.”

Fines of up to £500 can be issued for not wearing a seat belt, if fitted.

There are a few exceptions, including if the vehicle is used for police, fire and rescue services, and for certified medical purposes.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We are aware of this and will be looking into it.”

The government has considered tightening seat belt rules so that drivers who don’t wear them could receive penalty points.

Latest figures from the Department for Transport suggest that around 30% of people killed in cars on UK roads in 2021 were not wearing seat belts.

Labor said Mr Sunak’s video added to “endlessly painful viewing” after he had previously appeared to struggle to make a contactless payment with his card.

“Rishi Sunak doesn’t know how to run his seat belt, his debit card, the train service, the economy, this country,” the spokeswoman said.

“This list grows by the day, and it makes for endlessly painful viewing.”

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper said: “It looks like the Prime Minister is so used to flying on private jets that he forgot to fasten his seatbelt in the car.

“That it violates a basic law is just embarrassing and downright dangerous.”

While the AA warned of the dangers of not wearing a seat belt.

“No matter who you are, it’s important to wear your seat belt in your car,” said an AA spokesman.

“In 2020, a fifth of all car fatalities were not wearing a seat belt.”

Mr. Sunak was already there criticized for flying into Blackpool on a taxpayer-funded RAF jet rather than by train.
