Shops in Highbury Park have been damaged after a building was hit

Police were called to Highbury Park at around 7.45pm on Saturday (February 18) to reports of a crash.

A car is reported to have driven into a parade of shops in Highbury Barn, but no one was injured.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the driver left before the police arrived.

Highbury councilor Caroline Russell and a Green Party London assembly member said the fitters had been “working all day” on Sunday and had still not completed the temporary repairs.

Addressing the incident, she said: “We were very lucky last night that no one was walking on that stretch of pavement when the accident happened.

“The car was going at a certain speed to cause the damage and it’s impossible to imagine what would have happened if there was a person in the way.”

According to the councillor, this was not the first accident at Highbury Barn, as she noted an incident during the Covid-19 lockdown when someone crashed into a parked car and destroyed some temporary pandemic pedestrian barriers.

“A few years ago a car drove into a laundromat on the other side of the road and the dustbin at the bus stop had also been knocked over before,” the councilor added.

Asked if action was needed to prevent future incidents in the area, she said: “Preventing selfish driving behavior is a huge challenge that needs action from the police, national government and local councils.

“I want to talk to council staff about whether there is a way to design the road a little differently, maybe with a new loading bay for traders on the side of the road where the accident happened and something to signal people driving to wait people. to go and cross the road at Highbury Barn, which is a friendly trading place, and is the center of the village of Highbury.’

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC with reference to CAD6389/18 February.
