Cyclists outnumber motorists in the City of London at peak times

There are more cyclists than motorists in the City of London at peak times, a new report shows.

Report prepared for c Corporation of the City of LondonThe Planning and Transportation Committee found cyclists are “the largest mode of transport recorded during rush hour on city streets”.

The data was collected from the latest traffic survey, which was carried out on November 23 last year, and found that the number of cars is around 80% of pre-pandemic levels, the number of pedestrians is 63% and the number of bicycles is 102%.

The researchers found that cyclists make up 40% of the city’s traffic during peak hours and more than a quarter (27%) during the rest of the day.

Danny Williams, chief executive of Active Travel England, said the results were “amazing”.

The survey found that while the number of motorists has fallen by 64% since 1999, the number of cyclists has increased by 386% over the same period.

It said: “Long-term trends observed from count data taken from 12 sites across the city since 1999 show that car volumes have continued to decline while bicycle volumes have continued to increase.”

The report came shortly after hundreds of cyclists has been shown to make cycling safer for women in London.

Cyclists cycled through central London – starting and ending at Marble Arch and ending at Buckingham Palace, Whitehall and Trafalgar Square – in a ride organized by the London Cycling Club (LCC) women’s network.

According to the LCC, less than a third of cycling journeys in London are made by women, despite making up 51% of the population.

Fear of traffic due to insufficient cycling infrastructure, abuse and violence, and the lack of safe cycling networks for local commuting are among the main barriers to women cycling.

Eilidh Murray, LCC Women’s Network Steering Group, said: “As women from all backgrounds, we know that being able to travel cheaply and independently by bike can bring us confidence, health and freedom. But we are put off by bike rides because of the lack of safe routes, dangerous riding, harassment, and more. “
