Sidcup vets are urging people to be extra vigilant when a snake bites a dog

Parkvec Veterinary Hospital released a statement on their Facebook page after a dog was bitten while out walking in Foots Cray Meadows.

They said that although the snakes prefer warm weather, there have been confirmed sightings in the winter months as well.

Signs to look for if your dog has been bitten include swelling, bruising, lameness, labored breathing, drooling, and pain when the area is touched.

If your dog is bitten, you should take it to the vet immediately and notify them in advance of your arrival by phone.

It helps if you spot the snake yourself, as being able to identify it helps vets treat your puppy.

A statement from Parkvec Veterinary Hospital said: “Yesterday we treated a dog with a suspected wild snake bite which occurred while out walking in Foots Cray Meadows, otherwise known as the Five Arches.

“There are 3 species of wild snakes in the UK.

“Although they prefer warm weather, they are most often found in June-August, sightings have also been confirmed between February and October.

“We urge all dog walkers to be extra vigilant during walks.

“Symptoms of snake bites include: swelling, bruising, lameness, difficulty breathing, drooling and pain when the area is touched.

“If you suspect your dog has been bitten by a snake, do not hesitate to take your dog to the vet immediately.

“If you see a snake, it will go a long way in identifying and therefore the treatment your pet will need.

“Do not approach or touch a wild snake.

“Call your vet and tell them you’re on your way.”
