Jeremy Corbyn will not be allowed to stand as a Labor MP at the next general election, Sir Keir Starmer confirmed at a meeting of the party’s governing body today.

The Labor leader will make a motion to make it clear the National Executive will not back his predecessor in the Islington North seat.

The move was branded a “sell-out and duplicitous act” by Momentum, the left-wing grassroots group set up after Mr Corbyn won the leadership.

Sir Cyrus last month ruled out the veteran MP standing again for Labouras he insisted that the party has undergone transformation since he assumed office.

The motion, which is expected to be supported by the NEC, says the Islington North MP “will not be endorsed by the NEC as a candidate on behalf of the Labor Party at the next general election”.

A senior Labor source said: “Keir Starmer has made it clear that Jeremy Corbyn will not be the Labor candidate at the next general election. The Labor Party is now unrecognizable from the one that lost in 2019.

“Tuesday’s vote will confirm this and ensure we can focus on our five missions to build a better Britain.”

Mr Corbyn was suspended from the parliamentary party in October 2020 over his reaction to the report, which was was critical of the party’s handling of anti-Semitism complaints under his leadership.

Immediately after the publication, Mr Corbyn said the “scale of the problem” of allegations of anti-Semitism by Labor had been “grossly exaggerated for political reasons by our opponents”.

Last month he revealed plans to ban him from standing as a Labor MP “outrageous attack” on his future, arguing this voters should decide who their candidate is.

A Momentum spokesman said: “We strongly condemn this salacious and duplicitous act by Keir Starmer, which further divides the Labor Party and offends millions of people inspired by Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.”
