Ann Kist-Butler will be the first female director of GCHQ | UK news

Ann Kist-Butler will become the first female director of GCHQ, Foreign Secretary James Cleverley has announced.

She will succeed Sir Jeremy Fleming as the 17th director of the Cheltenham-based intelligence agency.

Mr Cleverley said: “Anne Kist-Butler has an impressive record of working at the heart of the UK’s national security network, helping to counter threats from terrorists, cyber criminals and malicious foreign powers.

“She is an ideal candidate for leadership GCHQand Ann will use her vast experience to help keep the British public safe.’

The appointment was made following a cross-government recruitment process chaired by Cabinet Secretary Simon Case.

Ms Keast-Butler said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the 17th Director of GCHQ.

“GCHQ’s mission to keep Britain safe is as inspiring today as it was when it was founded more than 100 years ago, working at the heart of the UK and responding to some of the most pressing challenges of our time for our allies.

“Over the past year alone, GCHQ has contributed critical intelligence to shaping the West’s response to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine; helped stop terrorist plots; and worked tirelessly to tackle the ongoing threat of ransomware, whose influence is costing the UK dearly.

“I had the privilege of working at GCHQ a few years ago, so I know I am once again joining a world-class team of people with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of skills, who share a particular focus on making our country safer, and more prosperous.

“I am very keen to continue to ensure that GCHQ is an organization where everyone can perform at their best.”

Outgoing Headmaster Sir Jeremy, who announced his intention to resign said in January: “Anne’s appointment is fantastic news for the organisation.

“I have worked with Ann for decades and believe she is an excellent choice with deep intelligence and security experience in today’s technology world.”
