Coronation of King Charles III in photos

The British monarchy, in the words of the Victorian writer Walter Bayjot, “is usually hidden like a secret and sometimes displayed like a festive feast.”

Since his days there has been less mystery. Also the power of the monarch. But in the age of instant global communication, the spectacle is seen even more widely, and it was on full display Saturday in London as King Charles III was crowned.

The coronation procession and centuries-old ceremony at Westminster Abbey are the centerpiece of the three-day bank holiday weekend in Britain, which also includes street parties, al fresco dining and a concert on Sunday in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Take That are expected to perform.

Here’s a selection of the best photos from Coronation weekend.
