A man climbs onto the BBC Broadcasting House in protest against a controversial statue
Matt said officers were called at 4.15am to reports that a man had climbed onto the scaffolding at the front of the building and was hitting the Prospero and Ariel statue with a hammer.
The statue, carved by Eric Gill, has been on display since 1933, but campaigners have called for it to be removed because the sculptor recorded in his diaries that he sexually abused his daughters.
As of 7 a.m., a man was seen leaning on scaffolding wearing a Spider-Man mask.
The Met Police said in a statement: “It was not possible to safely detain the man given the circumstances of the incident, including the height. Specialists were called to the scene.”
Last year, another person climbed the scaffolding to damage the statue.
Due to damage, reconstruction began in January to repair the Grade II statue.
