St Fagans National History Museum in Cardiff has been voted the best free day out in the UK

St. Fagan’s National museum history, the National Railway Museum and Durham Cathedral are among the best free days out in the UK, according to a survey.

The most popular free attraction is St Fagan’s National History Museum in Cardiff, which scored 94% in a survey of almost 7,000 people by consumer group Which?

The open-air museum offers a “fascinating glimpse into history” and features 40 reconstructed buildings including a working forge, school, chapel and labor institute, while hands-on exhibits include blacksmithing, pottery and weaving demonstrations.

National Railway Museum in Yorkwhich displays over a hundred locomotives, including the Mallard, a working replica of George Stevenson’s Rocket and the only high-speed Shinkansen outside of Japan, is 91% linked to the Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum in Cosford.

Other highly rated free museums and galleries National Museum of Scotland (90%), Art Cardiff The National Museum (87%), the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Museum of Glasgow (87%), the Royal Air Force Museum in London (87%), the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool (87%), the Oxford University Museum of Natural History (86%) and the Scottish National Galleries (86%).

The watchdog also asked nearly 3,000 people to rate their favorite historic attractions, judging them on nine criteria, including accessibility, quality of food and drink and lack of crowds.

Durham Cathedral, described by Bill Bryson as “the best cathedral on planet Earth”, topped the rankings with 86%.

St David’s was also highly rated at 80%, followed by Chichester at 77%.

The Houses of Parliament come next with 76%, with any UK resident able to avoid paying around £25 per person by contacting their MP or member of the House of Lords to request a free 75-minute tour.

Other highly rated free historic attractions include Bury St Edmunds Abbey, which received a customer rating of 73%, Somerset House (71%) and Bristol Cathedral (68%).
