25-year-old man to stand trial accused of shooting police sergeant Matt Rattana

Sergeant Rattana, who has served in the Met since 1991, was the first ever officer to be killed inside a British the police station

Prosecutors say he was shot when De Zoysa was from Banstead Surreywas handcuffed and in solitary confinement.

The first bullet hit Sergeant Ratana – leaving him with a fatal chest wound.

The fourth and final round hit De Zoys in the neck, injuring him.

During a hearing in April, De Zoisa denied murder.

He appeared via video link from a hospital bed where he was being treated for brain damage after the shooting.

Sitting in a wheelchair, De Zoisa held up a “not guilty” sign.

His trial, which is expected to last three weeks, begins today at Northampton Crown Court.

It is known that de Zoys will not appear in person.

Sergeant Rattana was tragically planning to propose to his partner of six years, Sue Bushby, when he was killed.

She previously paid tribute to the hero police officer, saying: “There really are no words for how I feel right now about losing Matt; about losing someone I loved and was so close to in such a tragic way.

“I know Matt touched the lives of many, many people with his friendliness, patience, kindness, enthusiasm and caring.

“I had the pleasure of sharing five years of my life with this wonderful man – my gentle giant, with his contagious smile and big heart. I think of him with tenderness and love.

“Matt has been my partner, friend, confidant, support and soul mate.

“He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. Matt will always be on my mind and in my heart.”

Sergeant Ratana moved to work as a guard because it was safer before the tragedy.

Pals said Sergeant Rattana, father of a grown-up son, dreamed of traveling around Europe on his motorbike and then coached at his rugby club in Sussex.
