The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics inflation fell to 8.7%, but food inflation remained at nearly 20% and core price inflation is at a 30-year high.

“First, we will halve inflation this year to ease the cost of living and give people financial security,” Mr Sunak said in a speech in January.

Speaking today, Beth Rigby asked him: “Two of your five promises are to get inflation down by the end of the year, get the UK out of recession by the end of the year.

“If you fail with any of them, do you take personal responsibility, you don’t blame the Bank of England, you don’t blame consumers, you don’t blame business. It’s on you personally because these are your personal promises?”

The Prime Minister said: “Of course it’s down to me personally. I’m the Prime Minister. I’m the man who made these five promises to halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, reduce waiting lists and stop the boats, and I I intend to deliver them.”

Mr Sunak added: “When it comes to economic growth, as you mentioned, we have already avoided the recession that many predicted. People are improving our growth forecasts as we speak.

“I am announcing £14bn of investment in the UK which will support thousands of jobs. And just this week I was able to explain to the country how we are progressing our boat plan, which means that crossings to the UK this year have fallen by almost a fifth in the first five months of this year.
