The weather service warned that there will be showers “heavy and possibly thunderous” for many.

But temperatures are expected to remain warm across the country, with the mercury reaching 27 degrees in the southeast.

However, most areas, particularly in the Midlands and northern England, are also expected to experience some spells of rain, before becoming more extensive.

A Met Office spokesman said: “There will be some cloud around but most places will be dry and bright at the start.

“Some showers will develop quickly across the Midlands and N England before becoming more widespread in the afternoon.

“There will be a high chance of showers across England, Wales and parts of Northern Ireland. Although these showers will be frequent, with decent sunshine in between.

“The best of the sun will be in the far south and parts of N Scotland. Temperatures are likely to be slightly warmer than on Wednesday.

“It will be slightly cooler in places in the North East and coastal areas than on Wednesday with a breeze coming in from the North Sea keeping temperatures slightly cooler but still relatively warm.”

Friday will bring a “dry day for many with hazy sunshine”, with temperatures particularly hot in the south-east, but conditions will be cloudier in northern parts of England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Clear skies will be welcomed at the weekend, despite some outbreaks of rain in the north-east, with the forecaster predicting “plenty of sunshine” for much of the UK.

It comes after Glastonbury’s drenched crowds were hit by rain on Wednesday as they arrived ahead of the festival, which kicks off on Friday.

Revelers were seen decking out plastic ponchos and running for shelter after being stuck in a heavy downpour.
