Croydon pub The Spread Eagle wants to stay open until the morning

Spread eagle on Kateryninska Street, Art Croydon The council will be open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights, with a shift from 12am. The app also includes live music until 1am.

The application was submitted by Fullers but the pub is leased by Wellans, who run four other pubs in Croydon. The pub occupies what was originally the Croydon branch of the Union Bank of London in a Grade II listed building dating from 1893.

Only one local resident objected to the plans, saying the late-night music could be disruptive.

However, at a meeting of Croydon Council’s licensing committee on Tuesday (June 27), Austin Whelan of Whelan Pubs said the pub’s windows had been soundproofed so there would be no noise in the evening.

Councilors asked if people would be drinking at outdoor tables until the morning. Mr Whelan said it was already a policy that people should come inside from 9pm and smokers were not allowed to take drinks outside after that.

A local objector also complained that people would be able to buy alcohol to take away, but that was not what the pub had claimed.

A written response from James Anderson, solicitor for Fullers, said: “The application was for the sale of alcohol only and therefore would not be legal after the end of the current terminal, even if customers were given the opportunity to leave the premises with drinks as they would be removed from sales.

“Furthermore, the premises currently do not allow customers to leave the premises in any way with open containers and this policy will be maintained.”

The commission’s decision will be published within five working days.
