Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer’s speech was interrupted by Green protesters.
Sir Keir was in the middle of announcing his party’s pledge to overhaul education if they come to power when a man and woman – already on stage – unfurled a banner reading: “No more U-turns – New Green Deal”.
One young campaigner was heard berating the Labor leader for watering down his earlier pledge to spend £28bn on the Green Prosperity Plan – a reversal which Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves accused about raising interest rates and the “damage” the conservatives have done to the economy.
Another asked Sir Keir: “Whose side is the Labor Party on?”, to which he replied: “We’re on the side of economic growth.”
After further demands to “get a green new deal now” and “stop the U-turns”, the protesters were led off the stage.
Before continuing with his planned speech, Sir Keir told the audience: “I think they may have missed the fact that the last mission I launched was on clean energy by 2030, which is the single most effective a way to get the green future they and many others want.”
Labor has set out five “missions” for the government – including delivering the highest sustainable growth in the G7, turning Britain into a green energy superpower, building an NHS fit for the future and keeping Britain’s streets safe.
But today the focus was on education, with a plan to “break down barriers to opportunity at every stage.”
