A

photographer was jailed for 11 years after sexually assaulting a former client.

Sritharan Sayanthan, 42 years old, from Fitzroywas found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of attempted rape after a seven-day trial at Handon Crown Court.

The victim, who was in her 30s, used to go to Mr Sayantan’s studio Brompton Road in May 2022 to take a photo.

She met him again on July 8 for a drink, which she believes was part of the bonding process.

The pair met at a public house in Warren Street at 7.40pm. Mr Sayanthan urged the victim to drink alcohol before taking her to his studio.

She then fainted, but it was later learned that Mr. Sayanthan had sexually assaulted her.

Eventually she woke up to find him putting her clothes back on. He escorted her to the station.

The victim, a Chinese national, reported the incident to the police and Mr Sayantan and was later arrested and charged.

Detective Constable Sophie Baker, from Central North Command, said: “The survivor in this case was fantastic from start to finish. She was very nervous at the prospect of giving evidence, but with the help of an interpreter, she told the court in detail what happened.

“It can be scary for victims to describe the incident in court, but she did a wonderful job and I am personally very proud of her courage and grateful to her for coming forward.

“We also believe that there may be other victims of Sayantan and encourage anyone who wants to speak to us to come forward. No information is too small and you will be heard and supported.”

DC Baker added: “Anyone with information about Sayanthan should call police on 101 quoting reference 1852/31JUL22. I would like to urge anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted to come forward and report what happened to the police. We will support you and take you seriously.

“Working with our partners in the criminal justice system, we are determined to bring offenders to justice. We will prioritize action against sexual and violent, predatory offenders, and we would ask any victims or witnesses of sexual abuse to contact us. We have specially trained officers to help and support you.’
