Clapham High Street crash: Man in 20s fighting for his life

Today, July 30, at around 4:02am police were called to the scene of Clapham High Street following reports of a crash between a car and pedestrian.

Met officers attended the scene along with ambulance crews from London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.

The pedestrian, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and remains in police custody in south London.

Road closures were put in place on Clapham High Street, Manor Street, Stonehouse Street, and Venn Street for police to deal with the incident.

Police have confirmed that these roads have now re-opened.

Enquiries to establish the circumstances remain ongoing.

A spokesperson for Met Police said: “Police were called at 04:02hrs on Sunday, 30 July to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Clapham High Street, SW4.

“Officers, the London Ambulance Service, and HEMS attended.

“The pedestrian, a man aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital. His injuries are currently life threatening.

“The driver of the car, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

“He was taken into custody at a south London police station.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

“Road closures were put in place on Clapham High Street, Manor Street, Stonehouse Street, and Venn Street while officers dealt with the incident.

“The roads have now been reopened.”
