University of London secures ISO 14001 re-accreditation for Environmental Management System

The University has successfully achieved re-accreditation of ISO 14001 for its Environmental Management System (EMS), following an external audit in July. The standard sets requirements for establishing environmental management processes and procedures that help improve environmental performance across a wide area of responsibility areas.

The external auditor found that “the University has an excellent integrated management system” and that there is “a good focus on continual improvement”.

“The Sustainability team is delighted to have passed this re-accreditation,” says Maddie Reason, Sustainability Project Officer. “The hard work put in by all the Estates and Property Services and other teams involved makes this a great collaborative achievement. This re-accreditation reaffirms that we are compliant with environmental legislation, managing our environmental aspects and working together to reach our environmental goals and commitments.”

The development of robust sustainability practices is part of UoL’s strategic objectives as it works towards a zero operational carbon by 2036 commitment. The University is also aiming to increase total recycling waste to 74% by the end of 2026/27. The recycling rate for 2022/23 was 54%. so we have work to do and will be looking to everyone for help in achieving our goal.
