UK weather forecast: Exact date snow will hit Scotland as Met Office predicts temperatures will drop by 10C in cold snap

THE Met Office has revealed the exact date snow will hit Scotland with a cold snap seeing temperatures drop by 10C in just days.

Meteorologists said cold weather is set to hit the north western areas of the country – with the white stuff expected to fall on the Scottish mountains.

Yellow warnings are already in place for parts of the country – with heavy rain and wind expected to cause disruption today.

And as the mercury plummets by 10C, up to 2cm of snow is expected in the Scottish mountains.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge explained: “There will be a colder influence to parts of the UK forecast, particularly in northern areas over the weekend.

“This will bring temperatures down to around six degrees Celsius below average for the time of year in some locations.”

People living in Scotland are set to witness the first overnight frost of the season gathered in the mountains later this week.

Scots are expected to be able to see snow this Saturday – when temperatures are expected to plummet by 10C.

The meteorologist said: “Along with quite widespread frosts for northern parts, there is the potential that some showers over the highest ground in Scotland on Saturday could produce 1-2cm of snow.”

The expert said the snowfall is likely to happen in northern areas due to higher elevations.

He added: “This is not unusual for October, especially in Scottish mountains. We are not forecasting snow to lower elevations.”

Meanwhile, The Met Office has released yellow weather warnings for areas across the UK for today, tomorrow and Friday.

In a warning affecting the area around Barmouth, Wales, the Met warns: “Heavy rain is likely to cause some disruption to travel.

“Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.”

It will hit areas from Lancashire, Yorkshire and southwards extending across mid western and northern part of Wales.

It includes parts of Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd and Powys and will last from 6am to 6pm.

And tomorrow, a yellow weather warning has been put in place for heavy rain for southwest Britain that will last into Friday.

The Met warns there is “flooding of a few homes and businesses” that is likely, adding: “Occasionally heavy rain will reach southwest Britain Thursday evening, then spread across much of England and Wales on Friday.”
