Arsenal are aiming to avoid the Anfield 'washing machine' at Christmas, Mikel Arteta hosts

Mikel Arteta hopes for his own Arsenal side can avoid the Anfield “washing machine” to secure the long-awaited victory on Liverpool and from above Major league table for Christmas.

The Gunners boss will be aiming for a clean sheet after likening the task of playing away to Liverpool to being stuck on a spin cycle.

Arsenal have not won at Anfield since Arteta was part of the team that secured a 2-0 victory in September 2012.

The Spaniard knows first-hand how difficult it is to get results at Liverpool, having also spent time there with neighbors Everton before his time at Arsenal.

Victory, however, would be enough to keep the north London side atop the Christmas tree over the Christmas period, but Arteta – who once performed 'You'll Never Walk Alone' around the training ground in a somber attempt to prepare his side for the Anfield atmosphere – knows , that it will not be easy.

“It's different, different like Old Trafford,” he said.

“Old Trafford also has a great atmosphere and is historically an incredible place to visit. There are few of them in this country. Emirates is also one of them.

“I think I explained it sometimes when you're not feeling your best and you feel like they're on top of you and you can't get out of that washing machine.

“You try to overcome these situations, but that's the lesson – it happened once and it didn't happen again.”

When asked how to counter such a challenge, Arteta said he wanted his own team to put the hosts on a roll by “installing our very powerful washing machine”.

Not one to air his dirty laundry on people, Arteta was embroiled in a fight with a Liverpool colleague two years ago Jurgen Klopp this seemed to invigorate the home fans as Liverpool won again.

Speaking ahead of Saturday night's clash, Klopp urged Liverpool fans to make some noise and said he shouldn't be fighting the opposition manager to find a spark.

But Arteta said there would be “no” problems on the touchline after he picked up his fourth booking of the season in last weekend's win over Brighton.

Instead, Arteta challenged his Arsenal side to end another run and win at Anfield for the first time in 11 years.

If you want to be on top, you have to go to those places and be dominant

Mikel Arteta

Having marked four years as Arsenal manager earlier in the week, Arteta has already overseen victories at Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham, while they beat Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium this season.

It's next to leave Anfield with the three points and Arteta added: “We've done it at Old Trafford, we've done it at Stamford Bridge and many other places where we haven't done it for years.

“This is the next challenge. Go there and win. If you want to be on top, you have to go to those places and be dominant. That's what we will try to do.”
