Family pay tribute to Bromley Trey Daly in court

Trey Daly, 26, was killed on 11 February 2023 after being stabbed following an argument on a night out in Hackney Wick.

Mawien Mawien, 39, of Portland Close in Chadwell Heath, was today (January 31) jailed for five years for causing grievous bodily harm.

He was also given 18 months a sentence which will work simultaneously.

Christopher Appiah-Blay, 35, of Wick Road, Hackney, was jailed for 14 years for manslaughter.

He was given an additional 12 months in prison, to be served concurrently.

The second offense in both cases was possession of a sharp object.

U sentencinga heartfelt statement was read from Donna Saunders, Trey's mother.

She said: “Our family has suffered a lot of loss recently, from the loss of my father in 2022 to Trey in 2023.

“The last few years have been full of pain and sadness.

“When I got the call that my son had been stabbed, the world fell on my shoulders.

“On the taxi ride to the hospital I kept praying, 'Please don't let him die.'

“I broke down in the hospital, feeling empty and useless.

“After his death, my children and I fell into severe depression and it is difficult for us to carry on with our daily lives or just function.

“Letting go would be the end of my excruciating pain and as tempting as it is, I must now be strong for my other children who need me now more than ever.

“The loss of my son Trey has had a devastating effect on my family and his own family, leaving behind his partner Danielle and his beautiful son.

“What bright future they could have had has now been stolen in a senseless way.

“On the eve of the trial, we could not sleep or eat normally.

“I have rheumatoid arthritis and every day I have to double my medication to attend court.

“Surviving court hurt my body badly and must and I feel beaten down like I've just been in a war.

“I don't want anyone to go through what I and my family went through.”

Trey's partner, Danielle Trim, also shared a statement expressing her sadness at the loss of her partner and father of her son.

She said: “Trey has been my partner for six years and we have a little boy who is now four.

“We consulted each other every day, supported and protected each other.

“Like any relationship, we had our ups and downs, but we had a family and we felt safe.

“He was driven and loving, and he took pride in his appearance and the appearance of his family. He was a wonderful father and knew what he wanted for his son.

“He worked hard to support us financially and he planned our life with Tyson and now I have to try to follow those plans on my own.

“We were planning to have a second child, and now it was taken away from me.

“The idea of moving on, finding someone else makes me sick. That would mean missing out on time with Trey.

“When I found out, my journey to the hospital was horrible. His friends were there and they were confused. I felt empty.

“When they told me I fell on the floor, I denied it and I was screaming inside. All I could think about was how I could tell my son and live without him.'

Dealing with her grief, Danielle was out of work for three months.

She said she had been replaced by her employer and had only been able to get part-time work since then.

Danielle described the trial as “exhausting” and said the loss of Trey affects her every day.

She added: “I have been suffering from depression and anxiety attacks since Trey's death.

“For a long time, even a smile made me feel guilty, because it's not the same to be happy without it.

“I live in a dangerous area, there is always crime and noise.

“When Trey was here, he was my protector and I felt safe – one call and he was with me seconds later.

“Since he's gone, I'm afraid I won't let Tyson look out the window.

“Knife crime was not a part of my life before Trey died. Now I feel that no matter what security is in place, you never know what people are holding. It makes going out scary, and now I only go out on special occasions.

“Deep down, I always waited and waited for this trial to end.

“It's bittersweet now because, regardless of the verdict, it's not over.

“I'll never forget who he was.”
