I'm a former Arsenal star – now cycling to training every day after ditching London for sunny Spain

FORMER Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has opened up about how his life has changed since joining Real Betis.

The 28-year-old left north London in 2022 and has struggled to settle at his new club.

He spent a year in Barcelona but was limited to just seven appearances before joining Sporting Lisbon on a six-month contract.

Belen returned to Real Betis. last summer, having previously held a seasonal rental there Arsenaland has flourished ever since.

On the field, he proved himself as a first team player.

In addition, he is a big supporter of the fight against climate change.

Now the Spaniard travels to training and back by bicycle, not by car.

And he believes more footballers should do the same wherever possible.

Talking to The TimesBelen said: “I understand that [if you’re playing] planes are needed on the other side of Europe.

“You have to start slow. There are so many things in the sport that we do because of tradition that I think we have to adapt.

“We wear a new shirt every game. We get a lot of planes.

“Promote trains or buses over flying, especially private jets.

He added: “I always take my time when shopping. We're used to buying things instantly, on impulse. It takes me months before I make a purchase.

“What is the best solution for sustainability, for the planet and as a consumer?”

Discussing his excitement at joining his boyhood club, Bellerin said: “Every Christmas I received presents from Betis.

“From the moment I got here, I knew I wanted this to be my home for a long time.

“For me personally, it is also important to be part of a club that strives not only for sustainable development, but also for its community.

“A club that is putting systems in place for fans and workers, players and staff to make it easier for us to live greener lifestyles. It's an inspiration.”
