Review of The Swimmers – Sarah Winklener, St John’s Leatherhead

The Swimmers is a Netflix film about the perilous journey of two brave refugee sisters that culminates in a race at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Swimmers, released on Netflix on November 23, 2022, is a true story about two

teenage girls who swam the Greek sea to escape their war-torn home country,

Syria.

The film tells the amazing story of two sisters, Yusra and Sarah Mardini (Natalie Issa and Manal Issa), who fled Syria during the 2015 civil war in hopes of finding a better life in Germany.

The incredible special effects and editing made it feel like the audience was right there with the two girls throughout their journey, be it the tension and terror as they struggled for breath and almost drowned in the ocean to save their refugee friends, or the joy and relief , when Yusra Mardini won the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In some aspects it was a really heartwarming film that will definitely make you cry in certain scenes, but overall I 100% recommend watching it as it will surely give anyone a new perspective on how they see the world and the people in it.
