A country estate on the northern outskirts of London is for sale for £20 million
Highwood Lodge Farm at Mill Hill has 103 acres of land, including horse stables and a homestead believed to have been built around 1900.
Set at the end of an impressive lime-lined avenue, the Gothic-style house boasts five reception rooms, a master bedroom suite and six bedrooms.
The online description reads: “Highwood Lodge Farm Estate is an exceptional residential, amenity and equestrian estate located just nine miles north of central London.
“This estate offers a unique combination of country living in a London postcode. It has a lovely interior of a non-listed estate, laid out as a country house, surrounded by formal gardens and accessed via a private tree-lined driveway.’
There is a four car garage with an upstairs apartment, a pool house with an indoor pool and solar panels.
The estate also has five cottages and apartments, a tennis court and a pond.
Highwood Lodge Farm, nine miles from central London, began to develop into a substantial estate in the mid-1600s.
Former residents include the actress Mary Ann Porter, the philanthropist William Brodie Gurney, Major General George MacDonogh and Sir Frederick Aked Sellers, a former judge of appeal and privy councillor.
The current owner, Andrew Reid, London’s only racehorse trainer, has lived in the estate with his family since 1995 and has made huge improvements during his tenure.
He renovated the house, front gardens and indoor swimming pool, and developed extensive equestrian facilities on the estate.
The estate now includes 14 loose boxes, stables, stables, six gallops, a polo field and an Olympic-sized outdoor arena suitable for dressage, showjumping and polo.
The estate also has a cross-country course designed by Captain Mark Phillips, and horse trials held at the site used to attract crowds of over 10,000.
The facilities were a highly successful training yard for racehorses where Reid trained 179 winners, including the all-weather Derby winner Eccentric and winners of the Derby Day and Ox Day races.
Reid also planted more than 6,000 trees and installed a mile and a half of hedgerows – all aimed at supporting the estate’s natural biodiversity and ecosystem.
The estate is being marketed by Savills.
Reid said: “I hope that Savills will find a buyer who appreciates the opportunities that Highwood Lodge Farm Estate offers and who will appreciate and continue to improve the farm as I have throughout my years of ownership.”
Crispin Holbarov, joint head of The Private Office at Savills, said: “An equestrian estate of this caliber and size in such close proximity to central London is highly unusual.
“One of the key benefits for me is the combination of a country house with excellent transport links into central London.”
