Strictly’s Helen Skelton reveals she has made two West End appearances ahead of Musicals Week in the show
SHE has won the Strictly Come Dancing leaderboard and was the bookies’ favorite from the start, but HELEN SKELTON is yet to score 40 points.
This week’s theme of musicals could change all that as the TV host revealed she has previous experience in West End.
Alena took part in two productions in one night as part of a Red nose day challenge in 2013 when she was the host Blue Peter.
The assignment led her to join the cast of Stomp and We Will Rock You.
One Helen dressed up in casual clothes to bang her shin on lids and cans, and the other in a silly leather outfit.
But it was singing that made her blush.
Helen told me: “I was once made to sing Bohemian Rhapsody in We Will Rock You. It was the most hurtful moment of my entire life.
“When it went out television I was so physically embarrassed that I crawled under the desk in a ball.
“I enjoyed performing on the West End stage, although I do feel a bit sorry for the audience.”
This weekend, Helen will dress up as Sally Bowles for the Chosen Couple dance to Mein Herr from Cabaret with her partner Gorka Marquez.
But if she ever wanted to return to the West End, Helen would choose a much more feminine role. She added: “It would be the sassy, sassy Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
“She’s taking on the Beast for crying out loud and you can dance with a cup of tea.”
If the judges give her four tens, she will score more than a cup of tea.
- WATCH Strictly Come Dancing live tomorrow night at 8pm on BBC One, with the results shown on Saturday in conjunction with the World Cup.
Choice Weiss, Hamza
Hamza Yasin will be dressing up as Simba to dance to The Lion King this week, but he’d rather have fun at Austrian mountain in a pair of curtains.
His favorite musical is The Sound of Music, after watching the 1965 film starring Julie Andrews as a child.
He is such a fan that he listens to his song Edelweiss on repeat.
He said: “My mum made us watch The Sound of Music and I fell in love with the film, the story and then the music.”
His dance partner Jovita Prystal will be dressed as Nala for the Lion King routine.
Celebrity night numbers
THE Strictly pros will open tomorrow’s show with a set of musicals including Rent, Grease and Six.
An ex-judge then performs on Saturday’s final show Arlene Phillips the new musical Shaw Cher.
And there’s all the action from the rest of the celebrities.
Here’s what to expect:
Fleur and Welcome – fast step to I Got Rhythm by An American U Paris.
Kim and Gratian – cha cha to Glory from Glory.
Molly and Carlos – Charleston to Hot Honey Rag from Chicago.
Hamza and Jovita – samba to the song “They live in you” from “The Lion King”.
Will Mellor and Nancy Sue – Foxtrot to Sun and Moon by Miss Saigon
Alena and Gorka – Choice of couples for Mein Herr from Cabaret.
West End Girls Molly and Fleur
THERE is NO shortage of celebs taking to musical theater after a twirl on the Strictly dancefloor.
Joe McFadden shone in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, at that time Macy Smith currently on the Strictly Ballroom tour.
So it’s no surprise to hear that two of the actors in this year’s series have set their sights on London’s West End.
Molly Rainford and Fleur East could have huge futures and already have the perfect roles in mind.
Molly said: “I would love to play Elle Woods in Legally Blonde in the West End. It would be a wicked role and a lot of fun.”
Fleur added: “A dream role in Sister Act would be number one.
“And then appearing as Tina Turner will be number two.
“Imagine being able to play Tina and perform all of her songs.”
It really would be The Best.
Rosie Ramsey – wife and podcasting partner of comic CHRIS – will take part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special.
She will be dancing with Neil Jones and DJ Ricky Haywood-Williams will be paired with Luba Mushtook.
Other names will be announced soon.
Grease is the word for Kym
Kim Marsh once dreamed of starring in a musical, but believes her moment has passed.
If she had to pick one, it would be Grease, which spawned the 1978 film starring John Travolta and Stockard Channing.
Kim, below, told me: “It’s so much fun and I can watch it over and over again.
“There’s only one character I’d like to be, and that’s Rizzo, but I’m too old to play her.” And added: “I’m not innocent enough to be Sandy!”
Having recently seen Kim’s brilliant theatrical performance as the sleazy Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction, I’m inclined to agree.
She will be dancing in eighties workout gear Graziano Di Prima for a routine based on Fame.
